ABOUT RM
Kim Namjoon (RM)
Born on September 12, 1994, and raised in Ilsan, just west of Seoul, Kim Namjoon—better known by his stage name RM—is the leader and main rapper of BTS. As both an artist and visionary, he has played a central role in shaping the group’s identity and musical direction since its earliest days.
Originally entering the underground hip-hop scene under the name Runch Randa, Namjoon also recorded under the names Largo and The Nextist before joining BTS. His early stage name “Rap Monster” reflected his undeniable talent and intensity as a rapper, though in later years he chose the moniker “RM,” which he felt better captured his growth and artistry. To fans and fellow members, however, he is also affectionately known as Joon or Joonie.
RM’s reputation as a lyricist and composer is foundational to BTS’ success. He has been writing music since his teenage years and continues to pen the majority of the group’s lyrics, blending sharp wordplay with deep reflection. As the fourth-oldest member, yet positioned first as leader, RM speaks on behalf of the group, guiding their career vision while keeping the team united.
Beyond music, RM is recognized for his love of art and nature—so much so that fans have coined the term “namjooning” to describe moments of quiet appreciation in parks, galleries, and natural spaces. The Han River parklands in Seoul are among his favorite retreats, where he is often spotted biking along the trails.

A gifted communicator, RM is fluent in English, making him the natural spokesperson for BTS in international interviews. His intelligence, famously noted with an IQ of 148, shines through in his eloquence and thoughtfulness, most notably during his powerful address at the United Nations, where he delivered the message of Love Yourself: Speak Yourself. At the same time, his clumsy charm, which earned him the nickname “God of Destruction” for his knack for breaking things, makes him deeply relatable to fans worldwide
Visually, RM is easy to recognize. He is the tallest member of the group and is often seen with his signature dimples that brighten his smile. In 2022, he joined the other members in getting a “7” friendship tattoo, his placed on the inside of his right ankle.
Currently serving his mandatory military service, which began on December 10, 2023, with discharge expected on June 10, 2025, RM remains one of the most influential figures in modern music. As the leader of BTS, he has not only helped craft chart-topping hits but also continues to inspire millions globally with his artistry, intellect, and authenticity
