ABOUT SUGA
Min Yoongi (SUGA)
Born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea, Min Yoongi, known worldwide as SUGA, is a rapper, songwriter, and producer for BTS. As one of the group’s earliest members alongside RM, SUGA has been instrumental in defining the sound and emotional depth of BTS’ music from the very beginning.
Before joining the group, Yoongi was active in the underground rap scene under the name Gloss, where he established himself as a talented lyricist and performer. Today, he is widely recognized under multiple monikers, including Agust D for his solo projects and DJ Shup-D for his radio program KKUL 613 FM. His stage name, SUGA, reflects his long-standing love for basketball, drawn from the first sounds of “shooting guard,” his position on his high school team.
SUGA’s artistry is defined by its honesty. His raps are powerful and unflinching, often addressing themes of hardship, resilience, and self-reflection. He has openly shared his personal struggles with both physical and mental health, turning vulnerability into strength through his music. His lyrics, marked by emotional intensity and candor, have provided comfort and inspiration to millions of listeners around the world.
Known among fans and fellow members as the “grumpy grandpa” of the group, SUGA often appears quiet and reserved. Yet beneath this exterior lies sharp wit, profound insight, and a deep well of care for his bandmates. He is less physically affectionate than some of the other members, but his words of encouragement and recognition often reveal his unwavering support. He is also regarded as one of the hardest-working members of BTS, frequently writing and producing songs independently before sharing them with the group.

You will recognize SUGA by his smaller frame, as he is the second shortest member, paired with his unexpectedly deep and growly rap tone. When he smiles, he reveals a “gummy smile” that shows his entire gumline, a rare but beloved sight among fans. He often wears headbands in casual settings, favors dark clothing, and is distinguished by his multiple ear piercings. In 2022, after teasing fans for some time, he revealed his “7” friendship tattoo, placed on his left shoulder between scars from past surgery.
SUGA is also one of the most adventurous with his hair, embracing colors ranging from mint green to deep red, bright yellow, white, and black. This willingness to experiment visually mirrors his boldness as an artist
Beyond music, SUGA has been noted for his inclusivity and support of marginalized communities, including outspoken support for the LGBTQ+ community, a stance that has helped set BTS apart as champions of openness and acceptance in the global music scene.
On September 22, 2023, SUGA began his mandatory civil service, with his discharge scheduled for June 21, 2025. Even while serving, his legacy as one of BTS’ most thoughtful and innovative creators continues to resonate worldwide, cementing his role as both a cultural icon and an influential voice in contemporary music.
